Why not play your favourite game all day long on a golf holiday? This dream come true is easily achievable and can be great value. After all, whether the holiday is a short break or a full-length stay, any time spent on a golf course is the perfect form of relaxation.

But such a holiday is like any other. To have a successful time, you need to plan ahead.

Budget
Budgeting for a golf holiday is straightforward. You take account of travel, accommodation and food. Green fees, of course, are the other cost to allow for. Enthusiastic golfers will fit in two 18-hole rounds every day. If you think you’re likely to do this, and your holiday doesn’t include unlimited use of a course, ensure you have enough local currency. Alternatively, allow for the expense of the fees on your credit card.

To help you get a good idea of the fees, always research them in advance. You might also want to allow for extra expenses such as balls and, in the event of damage, additional clubs.

Location
There are now tens of thousands of golf courses across the world. These provide a choice from budget to luxury.

For a holiday playing golf in the sun, you could opt for Spain or Portugal. If you fancy somewhere further afield, try Florida. It has some great courses.

Don’t rule out the many courses in England and Scotland, however. The weather may not be as warm as Southern Europe or America, but the quality and setting of the greens can be superb.

Where to stay
If you want a golf holiday where you get straight down to playing, you might prefer a golf resort. Alternatively, there are many villas and apartments overlooking a golf course or within walking distance.

You may want variety, though. The best way to achieve this is by organising a golf tour and playing at a different course each day. You don’t necessarily need to keep changing your accommodation, however. Simply choose a villa or apartment in a popular golfing region and hire a car.

Reviews
Finally, before you book your holiday to an unfamiliar course, see what other golfers think of it. Go online and check first-hand reviews. These can give you a good idea of what to expect and provide insights the travel operators won’t usually offer. This way you can arrange a trouble-free golf holiday you’ll thoroughly enjoy.

Henry VIII
The story of football boots begins almost 500 years ago with King Henry VIII. In 1526, the king asked his shoemaker to make 45 pairs of shoes from velvet and one pair of boots from leather. He wanted these leather boots for playing football.

We have no idea of what these boots looked like. Nor do we have a record of their use. But Henry VIII was certainly a monarch keen on sport and it’s clear that he liked to have the right kit to match the game.

A 300-year gap
Despite the interest of King Henry VIII, football never caught on with the general population for almost 300 years. It was only in the early nineteenth century that the first regular references to football appear.

During this time, there weren’t football boots as such. Instead players wore work boots that covered their ankles and had steel toecaps. Some of the more dedicated players, however, hammered metal studs into the soles of the boots to provide more grip on the damp grass fields that served as pitches.

But it wasn’t until the middle of the 1800s that cobblers began making purpose-built boots for football. These were leather and extended over the ankles. One of their main drawbacks, though, was their absorption of water. On a wet pitch, the boots could become twice as heavy.

Twentieth century
In the first half of the twentieth century, the design of football boots followed the style set during the mid 1800s. After the Second World War, however, businesspeople saw the potential for more modern styles. They set up companies such as Gola and Hummel to produce boots for professionals and amateurs alike.

The general result was a boot that was lighter than before and that did away with ankle covering. In the 1960s, manufacturers cut back the boots still further and gave players greater freedom to move their feet and ankles.

From the 1970s onwards, sportswear became the subject of technology and boots for football were at the forefront of change. Boots became lighter; different materials appeared; and players could choose studs to match the condition of the pitch.

Within the last few years, thanks to precision lasers, professional players have boots built specifically for them. Great football boots are now the product of science and not just shoemaking skills.

The British Lions jersey couldn’t be easier to recognise. Furthermore, the jersey’s vibrant red colour isn’t just distinctive and easy to spot: it’s a symbol of the power and determination of the squad.

Early years
The British and Irish Lions – as we now know them – held their first tour in 1888. This was to Australia and New Zealand.

The British Lions jersey for the tour had red, white and blue hoops. The shorts were white.

For the next two tours – to South Africa in 1891 and 1896 – the jersey changed. It became red and white, complemented with dark blue shorts.

The 1899 tour of Australia saw yet another change. This time, the jersey had red, white and blue hoops again but with the blue hoops wider than the others.

1910 – 1938
In 1910, the squad had a dark blue jersey with red socks and white shorts. After the First World War, the South African tour of 1924 saw the shorts become blue to match the jerseys. The first version of the four-quartered badge also appeared.

It was around this time that the nickname of the “Lions” came into popular use. In fact it was during the 1930 tour to New Zealand that the press began referring to the team in this way.

One other notable feature of the 1930 tour was the difficulty distinguishing the dark blue of the Lions’ jerseys from the black of the New Zealanders. This resulted in the All Blacks agreeing to wear white instead.

The last British and Irish Lions tour before the Second World War was in 1938 to South Africa. On this occasion, the players wore the dark blue jersey they had sported since 1910.

Today’s jersey
The jersey of the British and Irish Lions as worn today first appeared on a pitch in 1950. It formed part of a kit that represented the English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish nations: a red jersey, white shorts, and blue and green socks.

The 1950 red jersey was plainer than now, however, because it didn’t carry the logos that we’re used to seeing. Such logos first appeared in 1993. Since then they’ve changed to reflect the team’s sponsors.

There is of course one other important feature on the modern British Lions jersey. Stitched to the left breast is the colourful badge that’s famous across the rugby world.

Different formats
The British Lions jersey has therefore had a number of formats over the past 120 years or so. But the most striking of them all is today’s dynamic red.

Purpose
The purpose of base layer clothing is simple. It aims to make anyone involved in an outdoor activity – whether it’s a gentle hike or an intense game of rugby – as comfortable as possible.

Cotton
For many years, people thought that the best way to achieve outdoor comfort was to wear a cotton T-shirt under a sports top, fleece or waterproof. The problem with cotton, however, is that it absorbs your sweat and keeps the moisture next to your skin.

The result is that after a while you have a damp, cold and often smelly garment hanging from your shoulders.

The difference
Base layer clothing works differently. The fabrics draw any moisture you produce away from your skin and your clothing. The result is that your T-shirt, shorts or leggings stay dry. This in turn means you remain comfortable and warmer.

If you’re active in a cold climate, though, you need to remain warm as well as dry. Base layer clothing certainly helps but you may still need mid and outer layers. However, in a hot atmosphere you can wear base layer clothes by themselves. Some even have high protection ratings to prevent sunburn.

Material
The best type of base layer clothing therefore gives you “wicking” (the movement of sweat from your body to the outside); odour-resistance; comfort; and protection from the sun’s rays.

The material manufacturers use to achieve all this varies. Polyester is popular, as is polypropylene. However, a lot of companies use merino wool, although the finished product tends to be expensive. A further option now available is hybrid clothing that blends merino wool with polyester and polypropylene.

With such a range, your choice can prove difficult. A useful guide is to check that the fabric has the four properties of wicking, odour-resistance, sun protection and comfort. To these, you can also add the way the manufacturer has put a garment together.

For instance, look for flat-locked seams. Because base layer clothing fits snugly to your body, you don’t want seams that press uncomfortably against you. Flat-locked seams are just what they say they are: flat and therefore unobtrusive.

Also avoid inside labels sewn on the fabric. These can prove scratchy against your skin, especially after you’ve worn a garment for a while.
Labels are, of course, inevitable so look for those that are heat-transferred. These blend into the fabric.

Bear such points in mind and you’ll find base layer clothing a great addition to your outdoor wardrobe.

Voltage converters are useful devices that provide power for portable tools, appliances and equipment. It may not be easy, however, to understand the terms that apply to converters. Without such knowledge, it’s possible to buy a converter that’s unsuitable for the work you have in mind. The following guide will help you.

Voltage converters
A voltage converter adjusts the voltage of a power source. It either increases the voltage or reduces it.

A converter often forms part of a device that delivers a power supply suitable for a particular use.

DC-AC power inverter
A DC-AC power inverter changes electrical direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). In other words, it inverts – or modifies – the power supply.

The DC power supply may come from a battery or a solar unit. You need to change this to AC power, however, to run standard electrical appliances.

Modified sine wave
An inverter generates AC power. In order to do so cheaply and successfully, the inverter uses a modified sine wave. This simulates the sine wave that electric companies employ to help transmit power from a generator to your home.

True sine wave
A true sine wave produces a more efficient, trouble-free AC power supply. It does this by maintaining a constant frequency. This means you receive a steady supply of power. Hence true sine wave voltage converters are better than modified sine wave models for devices such as computers.

Watt
A watt (W) is a term that measures power. A 1500 watt unit is therefore more powerful than a 100 watt unit. When buying voltage converters, you must check the wattage of the appliances you want the converter to run. If you have a 500 watt power tool, for instance, you want a converter that can handle at least 500 watts and preferably 10 or 20% more.

Also bear in mind that you may wish to run more than one appliance from your converter. If so, add the number of watts of each appliance and ensure your converter can handle the total plus 10 – 20%.

Cooling fan
A working voltage converter can create a lot of heat. Some therefore have fans to cool them. Smaller models may not have a fan because the surrounding air keeps their temperature under control.

Thermostatically controlled cooling fan
Any wide changes in temperature can cause a converter to stop or break down. A thermostatically controlled cooling fan automatically keeps the temperature of voltage converters stable.

Whatever type of boat you have, you want to be sure your marine power source supplies enough suitable electricity for your appliances. A failure to allow for this can lead to a spoiled boating trip.

DC-AC
Marine batteries are robust and long lasting but they operate on DC power. If you have AC appliances on your boat – such as a microwave or radio – you need a DC-AC inverter to convert the power to usable form.

Think of the set-up as a simple sequence. The battery supplies DC power to the inverter; the inverter then transfers this power in AC form to your appliances.

Running down
While it’s providing power, of course, the battery is running down. So you have to keep it topped up by running your boat’s engine.

Inevitably, though, you’ll operate appliances without wanting to keep the boat’s engine ticking over. You might therefore want a suitable charger to bring the battery back to full power at the end of your trip.

In other words, for marine power that supplies your needs you want a battery charger as well as an inverter.

Inverter
The best types of inverters are True Sine Wave inverters. These give you low distortion and smoothly running appliances. If you’re using a computer on your boat, a True Sine Wave inverter also helps you avoid any sudden crashes. It does this by keeping the power consistent.

The simplest way of judging a True Sine Wave inverter is by its wattage. A 600-watt model, for instance, will run satellite equipment and any basic electronics – the sort you might use for entertainment at home.

The more powerful inverters include 700, 1000 and 1500 watt models. These provide the scope to use microwave ovens, portable electric lights and power tools.

A company that deals in marine power supplies will give you the following advice if you ask what inverter suits you best:

•	add together the wattage of the appliances you’re likely to use at any one time
•	add another 20% on top

Take the example of a computer and a microwave that you’ve brought on board. Say the wattage of the computer is 300and the wattage of the microwave is 800. Your total is therefore 1100 watts.

To be on the safe side add 20%. This is 220 watts. The total wattage then becomes 1320. In these circumstances, it’s best to opt for a 1500 marine power model that comfortably supplies what you want.

Looking for the ideal holiday home can be surprisingly hard. After all, at the luxury end of the market you’ve a right to demand the best. This is why you should consider the property for sale at the Aphrodite Hills resort in Cyprus.

Well-established
Cyprus is a well-established holiday destination. It has all the features that encourage visitors not just to return but also to buy property here. These features include an excellent climate, great cuisine and high quality leisure facilities.

Reputation
The award-winning Aphrodite Hills resort builds on this reputation and improves it. The property for sale at Aphrodite Hills is exceptional. Cypriot builders and architects are skilful and meticulous. At Aphrodite Hills they have excelled themselves.

Each new and resale home blends Mediterranean charm with the best that modern living can offer. This resort aims to provide the finest holiday homes on Cyprus, and it succeeds in doing so.

Facilities
The homes, of course, are only part of the story. When you buy a luxury Mediterranean villa you also expect facilities to match.

These begin with an 18-hole golf course. This course is one of the best on the island and envied by anyone not fortunate enough to own an Aphrodite Hills property.

As well as a golf course, the resort has a tennis academy and equestrian centre. Invest in a property for sale at Aphrodite Hills and these facilities are available whenever you choose to use them.

Elsewhere in the resort there’s a world-class spa. You can take advantage of the latest treatments to help you relax and unwind.

The Aphrodite Hills resort also caters for children. There’s a club where they can make new friends and have fun. And there’s a teenage club to ensure older children can occupy themselves if they wish.

Onsite management
To sustain the quality of such a resort and the properties it contains, you need an onsite management team that deals with your every problem and request.

Aphrodite Hills has such a team. They handle everything you need. The service includes maids, pool cleaning, gardening and general home maintenance.

So if you buy a property for sale at Aphrodite Hills, you know the resort will look after you. You can enjoy your luxury home without a care in the world. It’s what you deserve.
